“A Career Built on Purpose, Principle, and the Power of Opportunity”

From the earliest days of her legal career, Kathleen Harris understood that becoming an exceptional lawyer required more than mastering the law, it required learning how to think, act, and lead with the clarity and responsibility of a partner long before earning the title. She was fortunate, she says, to be entrusted with meaningful responsibility early on, invited into strategic conversations, and given direct exposure to clients at a stage when many young lawyers are still confined to the periphery. Those experiences shaped her instincts, sharpened her judgment, and taught her the value of taking ownership rather than waiting for direction. They also instilled in her a deep commitment to practical, client focused solutions and to building relationships grounded in trust. Looking back, she speaks with gratitudefor the opportunities she was given, for the people who guided her, and for the chance to contribute to a profession she hopes to leave better than she found it. She acknowledges she will not always get everything right, but she is unwavering in her belief that doing one’s best, consistently and with integrity, is the foundation of meaningful impact.

When Kathleen joined Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer, she carried with her a set of core goals that have only expanded in scope as her practice and leadership responsibilities have grown. Central to her mission has been the belief that opportunity must be accessible to all. She has championed partnerships with universities, supported numerous pro bono cases, and launched the firm’s business intern scheme to widen the pipeline of individuals who might not otherwise see a path into the legal profession. Her thought leadership has extended beyond the firm as well, including her widely read Law Gazette article, “Access to Justice: For the Few but Not for You,” which confronts systemic barriers and underscores the firm’s commitment to public interest causes. Through the firm’s partnership with ILGA Europe, she has helped advance LGBTQ+ rights and broaden the reach of the firm’s advocacy.

Her work has not gone unnoticed; We Are The City recently named her an Inspirational Woman, recognizing her authenticity, her support for others, and her determination to ensure that DEI initiatives translate into real, lasting change. Her leadership has also shaped the firm’s growth and reputation in tangible ways. Last year, she strengthened the firm’s partnership with upReach by championing the integration of the REAL (Relative Education Attainment Level) Rating into the firm’s recruitment process. This contextualized tool evaluates academic achievement in light of socio economic background, offering a fairer and more holistic assessment of candidate potential. Embedding the REAL Rating has been a significant step toward equitable recruitment, ensuring that talent is recognized in context rather than through narrow metrics. Kathleen’s strategic vision is equally evident in the renewal of the firm’s Bright Network partnership for an additional two years. With more than 850,000 diverse students and graduates in its community, Bright Network aligns closely with her mission to level the playing field for underrepresented talent. Leveraging its segmentation capabilities, the firm has expanded the reach of its graduate opportunities while maintaining the highest standards for candidate quality.

Her commitment to representation extends beyond strategy and into personal engagement. She spoke on a panel at Bright Network’s Diverse Legal Leaders event, connecting with more than 300 students and offering a candid, encouraging view of what a career in law can look like. Under her guidance, the firm’s presence at law fairs, workshops, and networking events has been intentional and inclusive. In November, the London office—following her direction—hosted more than 30 students for a fireside chat with the firm’s training principal and lawyers. Strategic promotion through partner networks such as Aspiring Solicitors, the 10,000 Interns Foundation, and the InterLaw Diversity Forum ensured the event reached a wide and diverse audience. These efforts have yielded measurable results: a 14.5% increase in interest and applications, and a remarkable 62% rise in offers for schemes and training contracts from candidates from diverse socio economic backgrounds. For Kathleen, these numbers are not just metrics, they are evidence that meaningful change is possible when intention meets action.

As Head of the London office, Kathleen is acutely aware of the pressures facing modern law firms. Regulations shift, global risks evolve, and client expectations grow more complex by the year. Remaining competitive, she believes, requires staying closely attuned to clients and the environments in which they operate. She emphasizes monitoring regulatory developments, anticipating global risks, and encouraging teams to think ahead about how those changes translate into client needs.

Collaboration across practices and geographies is another cornerstone of her approach, ensuring the firm can respond quickly and bring the right expertise to complex, cross border issues. Just as importantly, she believes adaptability comes from investing in developing talent, embracing innovation, and cultivating a culture that values curiosity, agility, and continuous improvement.

"“Access to Justice: For the Few but Not for You,” which confronts systemic barriers and underscores the firm’s commitment to public interest causes.

Her leadership journey, like many, has not been without challenges. She has navigated periods of uncertainty, shifting client demands, and the complexities of leading teams through high pressure situations. One of the most significant challenges has been balancing decisiveness with inclusivity—particularly when time sensitive decisions affect a wide range of stakeholders. These experiences have shaped her decision making style into one that is measured, collaborative, and grounded in transparency. She listens carefully, seeks diverse perspectives, and remains clear about priorities, all while acting with confidence and a long term view of what is best for the firm, its clients, and its people.

When evaluating new opportunities or potential expansions, Kathleen takes a disciplined, strategic approach. She looks first at alignment with the firm’s long term vision and core strengths, assessing whether an opportunity enhances the firm’s ability to serve clients across jurisdictions and supports sustainable growth. Cultural alignment is equally important; technical capability must be matched by shared values, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. In a competitive market like London, she believes long term success depends on maintaining the quality and reputation that defines the firm.

Looking ahead, Kathleen is energized by the opportunities before the London office and the firm as a whole. She sees tremendous potential in strengthening the firm’s presence as a destination for complex, cross border work and in deepening collaboration across offices to better serve clients operating internationally. Personally, she is motivated by the chance to continue mentoring the next generation of leaders and shaping the firm’s strategic direction in ways that are sustainable, innovative, and true to its values.

If there is one insight she adds beyond the formal questions, it is the centrality of relationships. Strong firms, she believes, are built not only on legal expertise but on trust—between colleagues, across offices, and with clients. She strives to lead in a way that is open, approachable, and grounded in listening as much as directing. Among the most meaningful moments of her career was meeting Sir Terry Waite, a humanitarian whose work embodies compassion, courage, and unwavering hope. Encounters like that remind her of the best qualities humanity has to offer and inspire her to lead with the same spirit of service.

Kathleen’s journey is a testament to what can happen when talent meets purpose, when leadership is rooted in values, and when opportunity is treated not as a privilege but as a responsibility.
